Big buck likely to be an
Ohio record for nontypical deer killed by a muzzleloader.
By
Jim Morris, Staff Writer
11-09
Rick Busse sees a lot of deer. As a popular
taxidermist located on
he
Miami-Shelby county line, Busse has handled some extremely
large deer,
including
the famous Beatty Buck about this time of year in 2000.
When Brian Stephens brought in the buck that he shot
on opening day
of
the deer gun season last week (Nov. 30), Busse figured it
would be just
another
nice buck to mount. And then he saw it.
"It's the biggest thing to come through my door
since the Beatty
Buck,
and that was nine years ago," Busse said.
The buck that is likely to have the name Stephens
Buck is a huge
18-pointer
with one main beam of its rack possibly the largest for
any
whitetail
ever recorded - 35 inches. And once the antlers are
officially
scored,
it is likely to be an Ohio record for a nontypical deer
killed by a
muzzleloader.
The rack will be green scored by Boone & Crocket
scorer Mike Wendel
of
Botkins today, Dec. 9. Once it has dried, 60 days from
now, it will be
officially
scored. There's a good chance it will measure out with a
net
score
of about 235 inches.
"The main beams - as far as my research has
been able to come up
with
- are the longest main beams ever recorded on any deer in
history,"
Busse
said. "Seeing a deer with main beams over 30 inches
is rare. And I
think
the record is 33½. These are both over 34½."
Stephens, 39, lives in Clayton and works in software
development for
CS
Stars. Having hunted every year since he was 12, he has
become an
experienced
hunter and has seen plenty of deer. But he's never seen
another
deer
like this one and, in fact, it took some time to sink in
once he downed
the
buck with his 50-cal. muzzleloader.
Hunting in a group of six family and friends on his
family's farm in
Highland
County, Stephens climbed into his tree stand just before
dawn. Not
long
after first light, he saw a doe followed by a buck with
huge antlers
walking
toward him.
"But I could never get a clear shot,"
Stephens recalled. "They were
walking
slowly around in an area covered with trees. They were
only about 50
yards
away from my stand, but I never had a clear shot."
Stephens watched the doe and buck for most of the
morning, hoping to
get
an opportunity that never came. Finally, they wandered off
and Stephens
decided
to take a lunch break at their farm house. He ate quickly
and then
returned
to his stand, hoping to get another glimpse at the monster
buck.
After
seeing several deer, that chance came again.
Just after 4 p.m. he saw the buck again, this time
about 250 yards
away
and headed straight for him. When it reached a fence row
about 80 yards
away,
it turned broadside to Stephens and his Thompson/Center
muzzleloader.
Stephens
took his shot.
"When the smoke cleared, I couldn't see him, so
I thought I had
missed
him," Stephens said. "Then I saw it running and
fall. I took a drink
of
water and collected myself. It was probably a half an hour
before I got
to
the deer. When I saw the rack, I couldn't believe it. I
knew it was big,
but
I never imagined it would be like this."
The deer, estimated by Busse to be 5 ½ to 6 ½
years old, weighed 215
pounds
after field dressing. It drew a big crowd when Stephens
checked it in
at
the Rocky Fork Truck Stop.
"It's amazing how quickly word gets around. We
were only there a few
minutes.
I even parked toward the back, out of the way, and people
still
crowded
around it," Stephens said.
If the Stephens Buck turns out anything like the
Beatty Buck, people
will
be crowding around for a look at those antlers for many
years to come..

On June 2, 2009 Ohioans
for Concealed Carry Reports:
One of the most frequently requested changes to Ohio law
by concealed
handgun licensees is to remove the ban on self-defense
while dining in a
nice restaurant. Under current Ohio law, concealed handgun
license (CHL)
holders are prohibited from carrying their handgun into
any restaurant which
has a class D liquor permit and serves liquor regardless
of whether or not
that person is consuming alcohol. This means virtually all
restaurants other
than fast food places or diners are off limits. Ohio is
one of the few
states with such severe restrictions, as thirty-nine
states, including every
state surrounding Ohio, have a provision for self defense
while dining and
several more are considering an exception as well.
Earlier this year, OFCC's Secretary/Treasurer Daniel White
worked with the
OFCC Coordinator committee and drafted a bill to address
this shortcoming.
We are pleased to announce that this bill has been
introduced!
House Bill 203, sponsored by Danny Bupb and Jarrod Martin,
was submitted
today and will soon be assigned to a committee. This
important fix would add
restaurants to the current exemption that covers class D
retail stores
provided the licensee is not consuming alcohol. The bill
was cosponsored by
16 other legislators, including Representatives Adams, J.,
Amstutz, Blair,
Combs, Hall, Huffman, Jones, Jordan, Maag, McGregor,
Sears, Snitchler,
Uecker, Wachtmann, Wagner, and Zehringer.
"The anti-gun crowd likes to talk about 'common
sense' gun laws," said
White. "Is it common sense to prohibit licensed
individuals from being able
to protect themselves just because they happen to be in a
restaurant that
serves alcohol? I can have a root beer and a cheeseburger
at McDonald's
while carrying my firearm and it's perfectly legal, but if
I go across the
street to Applebee's and have the same meal I'm committing
a felony! How is
that common sense?"
This point was clearly illustrated in Tennessee in early
April when Benjamin
Felix Goeser was gunned down as he and his wife were
leaving a sports bar.
Nicole Goeser had a concealed handgun license, but her gun
was locked in her
car because, like Ohio, Tennessee prohibits licensees from
carrying in a
restaurant that serves alcohol even if you're not
drinking.
Arizona, Illinois,
Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina,
North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and
Wisconsin are the only
states with a complete prohibition (source: handgunlaw.us).
The change is very simple, tacking on restaurants to the
existing exemption
for retail stores as found in ORC 2923.121. If this bill
is enacted, it
would still be a felony for a CHL holder to consume
alcohol in the
restaurant. Concealed carry in such restaurants would only
be legal if the
CHL holder is not drinking.
This is just the first step in a long process, and we
encourage all our
members and supporters to contact their legislators early
and often to urge
them to pass this bill before the legislature takes their
summer break.
Further reading:
2923.121(e) Any person who is carrying a valid
license or temporary
emergency license to carry a concealed handgun issued to
the person under
section 2923.125 or 2923.1213 of the Revised Code or a
license to carry a
concealed handgun that was issued to the person by another
state with which
the attorney general has entered into a reciprocity
agreement under section
109.69 of the Revised Code and who possesses the firearm
in a retail food
establishment or food service operation with any class
liquor permit issued
for that location under section 4303 of the Revised Code,
or in a retail
store with D-6 and D-8 permits issued for that store under
sections 4303.182
and 4303.184 of the Revised Code or a D-8 permit issued
for that store under
section 4303.184 of the Revised Code, as long as the
person is not consuming
liquor or under the influence of alcohol or a drug of
abuse.

Ruger
has recently received a small number of reports from the field
indicating that LCP pistols can discharge when dropped onto a hard
surface
with a round in the chamber. We are firmly committed to safety and
would
like to retrofit all older LCP Pistols. The retrofit involves
installation
of an upgraded hammer mechanism at no charge to the customer.
We want to remind gun users that,
for maximum safety when carrying any
pistol with a loaded magazine in place, the chamber should be
empty, and the
slide should be closed. Any gun may fire if dropped or struck.
How to determine if your pistol
needs the retrofit: All LCP pistols
bearing prefix "370" (that is, serial number 370-xxxxx)
may be affected.
Newly manufactured and retrofitted "370" prefix LCP
pistols with the new
hammer mechanism installed have been marked with a diamond in the
flat
portion of the slot just behind and below the hammer as show to
the right.
Going forward, new pistols will be marked with the serial number
prefix
"371" (serial number 371-xxxxx). Pistols with the
"371" prefix are not affected.
How to arrange to have your pistol
retrofitted:
Step 1 - Contact us and provide
your name, address, telephone number
and LCP serial number.
To sign up for the FREE safety upgrade:
go to the Ruger WebSite to sign up immediately using the on-line

The office
of Larry Dickey in East Palestine was broken into and one of the
things missing is an old
muzzleloader that was
hanging above the fireplace. It was an original 36
cal. percussion long gun,
barrel about 36 inches. A
turkey was engraved on the side lock and the wood was striped
light & dark,
lots of brass furnishings,
original condition. Please keep an eye out for it at

A lot of members ask what they can do for the
club and the answer is to buy a “200” Club ticket.
Non-club members can also purchase “200” Club tickets.
This fund raising event has become a
“200” Club due to the seating capacity of our facility.
Just 200 tickets are sold and there are no “meal”
tickets. Couples wishing to attend will need to purchase two of the
$50 tickets.
You can pay for your $50 ticket all at once,
or pay as little as $5 per month for 10 months.
Someone will be available at the monthly meeting to take
your payments and will also have tickets on hand.
What
does your “200” Club ticket entitle you to?
- A
Chance to win $50 at our monthly meeting from July 2005
through April 2006, providing your ticket is paid up to date.
- A
chance to win $2,000 at our banquet.
- A
fine banquet buffet, which includes soft drinks and adult
beverages.
- At
the banquet countdown, the 1st ticket, the 25th,
50th, 75th, 100th, 125th,
150th, and the 175th tickets drawn each
win $50.
Those holding the last four tickets remaining
have the option to split the $2,000.
If one decides not to split, the countdown continues.
After each subsequent drawing the remaining ticket holders
must decide whether to continue or split.
This is a great time.
The sooner you buy your ticket, the more chances you have
to win one of the monthly drawings.
Thank you,
John Rook, Lowellville Rod & Gun Club
