DESCRIPTION OF THE HAZARD:

During an internal technical review, Smith & Wesson determined that some of the sears used on Venture rifles produced from August 1, 2011 to October 28, 2011, may not have been manufactured to specification.  Because the sear is an important part of the firing mechanism, we are asking that all of the rifles produced during this time period be returned to Smith & Wesson so that the firearm can be inspected by our technicians to ensure that the rifle operates in a safe and appropriate manner.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT INVOLVED:

Anglers Need to be Aware of  Frog and Turtle Regulation Errors

COLUMBUS, OH - Anglers need to be aware of a typographical error in Publication 84, Ohio fishing regulations 2011-12 regarding the opening day of turtle season and the bag limit on frogs says the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

The correct opening date for turtle season is July 1, 2011, not the second Friday in June (June 10) as printed in the regulations.  Also, the bag limit on frogs should be 15, not 10 as printed.

The most current information regarding all fishing bag limits and dates can be found on the Division's website wildohio.com or by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.

White-tailed Deer Hunters Increase Kill on Opening Day of Gun Season
Statewide harvest up over 12 percent from 2009

COLUMBUS , OH Ohio hunters had near ideal weather for the opening day of deer-gun season.  Hunters took 37,805 white-tailed deer on Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.  The deer-gun season remains open through Sunday, December 5, and then reopens for two days on Saturday and Sunday, December 18-19.

The preliminary figures from deer check stations throughout the state show an increase of 12.5 percent from last year's opening day total of 33,607.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer checked on Monday included: Tuscarawas - 1,806; Coshocton - 1,536; Harrison - 1,439; Guernsey - 1,406; Holmes - 1,312; Licking - 1,259; Washington - 1,192; Ashtabula - 983; Muskingum - 930; and Athens - 886.

Combining the results of Monday's harvest with those from the early muzzleloader season, the first six weeks of archery season and the recent youth deer-gun season, a preliminary total of 96,725 deer have been killed so far this deer hunting season.  That number compares to 97,371 harvested last year at this time.  In all, hunters took a total of 261,314 deer during all of last year's hunting seasons.

Approximately 420,000 hunters are expected to participate in the statewide deer-gun season.   Ohio 's deer population was estimated to be 750,000 prior to the start of the fall hunting seasons.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio , frequently pursued by generations of hunters.  Ohio ranks 8th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry.  Each year, hunting has an $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

Division of Wildlife Chief Dave Graham challenges all deer hunters to make this year special for Ohio ’s hungry by labeling Saturday, December 4, as Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) Day.  Last year, hunters showed they cared by donating nearly 467,000 meals to Ohioans in need.

Hunters who give their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor and funding for the effort lasts.  Counties being served by this program can be found online at www.fhfh.org.

Hunters who wish to share their success can submit a photo of themselves and the deer they killed this year for publication on the Division of Wildlife's Web page.

A detailed listing of deer-hunting rules is contained in the 2010-2011 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available wherever licenses are sold, and online at wildohio.com.

The 2010-2011 licenses will not be printed on weatherproof paper.  Sportsmen and women should protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all.  Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.

Big buck likely to be an Ohio record for nontypical deer killed by a muzzleloader.
          By Jim Morris, Staff Writer
                                                                                                               11-09

Rick Busse sees a lot of deer. As a popular taxidermist located on
he Miami-Shelby county line, Busse has handled some extremely large deer,
including the famous Beatty Buck about this time of year in 2000.

When Brian Stephens brought in the buck that he shot on opening day
of the deer gun season last week (Nov. 30), Busse figured it would be just
another nice buck to mount. And then he saw it.

"It's the biggest thing to come through my door since the Beatty
Buck, and that was nine years ago," Busse said.

The buck that is likely to have the name Stephens Buck is a huge
18-pointer with one main beam of its rack possibly the largest for any
whitetail ever recorded - 35 inches. And once the antlers are officially
scored, it is likely to be an Ohio record for a nontypical deer killed by a
          muzzleloader.

The rack will be green scored by Boone & Crocket scorer Mike Wendel
of Botkins today, Dec. 9. Once it has dried, 60 days from now, it will be
officially scored. There's a good chance it will measure out with a net
          score of about 235 inches.

"The main beams - as far as my research has been able to come up
with - are the longest main beams ever recorded on any deer in history,"
Busse said. "Seeing a deer with main beams over 30 inches is rare. And I
think the record is 33½. These are both over 34½."

Stephens, 39, lives in Clayton and works in software development for
CS Stars. Having hunted every year since he was 12, he has become an
experienced hunter and has seen plenty of deer. But he's never seen another
deer like this one and, in fact, it took some time to sink in once he downed
the buck with his 50-cal. muzzleloader.

Hunting in a group of six family and friends on his family's farm in
Highland County, Stephens climbed into his tree stand just before dawn. Not
long after first light, he saw a doe followed by a buck with huge antlers
          walking toward him.

"But I could never get a clear shot," Stephens recalled. "They were
walking slowly around in an area covered with trees. They were only about 50
yards away from my stand, but I never had a clear shot."

Stephens watched the doe and buck for most of the morning, hoping to
get an opportunity that never came. Finally, they wandered off and Stephens
decided to take a lunch break at their farm house. He ate quickly and then
returned to his stand, hoping to get another glimpse at the monster buck.
After seeing several deer, that chance came again.

Just after 4 p.m. he saw the buck again, this time about 250 yards
away and headed straight for him. When it reached a fence row about 80 yards
away, it turned broadside to Stephens and his Thompson/Center muzzleloader.
          Stephens took his shot.

"When the smoke cleared, I couldn't see him, so I thought I had
missed him," Stephens said. "Then I saw it running and fall. I took a drink
of water and collected myself. It was probably a half an hour before I got
to the deer. When I saw the rack, I couldn't believe it. I knew it was big,
but I never imagined it would be like this."

The deer, estimated by Busse to be 5 ½ to 6 ½ years old, weighed 215
pounds after field dressing. It drew a big crowd when Stephens checked it in
at the Rocky Fork Truck Stop.

"It's amazing how quickly word gets around. We were only there a few
minutes. I even parked toward the back, out of the way, and people still
          crowded around it," Stephens said.

If the Stephens Buck turns out anything like the Beatty Buck, people
will be crowding around for a look at those antlers for many years to come..

On June 2, 2009 Ohioans for Concealed Carry Reports:

One of the most frequently requested changes to Ohio law by concealed
handgun licensees is to remove the ban on self-defense while dining in a
nice restaurant. Under current Ohio law, concealed handgun license (CHL)
holders are prohibited from carrying their handgun into any restaurant which
has a class D liquor permit and serves liquor regardless of whether or not
that person is consuming alcohol. This means virtually all restaurants other
than fast food places or diners are off limits. Ohio is one of the few
states with such severe restrictions, as thirty-nine states, including every
state surrounding Ohio, have a provision for self defense while dining and
several more are considering an exception as well.

Earlier this year, OFCC's Secretary/Treasurer Daniel White worked with the
OFCC Coordinator committee and drafted a bill to address this shortcoming.
We are pleased to announce that this bill has been introduced!

House Bill 203, sponsored by Danny Bupb and Jarrod Martin, was submitted
today and will soon be assigned to a committee. This important fix would add
restaurants to the current exemption that covers class D retail stores
provided the licensee is not consuming alcohol. The bill was cosponsored by
16 other legislators, including Representatives Adams, J., Amstutz, Blair,
Combs, Hall, Huffman, Jones, Jordan, Maag, McGregor, Sears, Snitchler,
Uecker, Wachtmann, Wagner, and Zehringer.

"The anti-gun crowd likes to talk about 'common sense' gun laws," said
White. "Is it common sense to prohibit licensed individuals from being able
to protect themselves just because they happen to be in a restaurant that
serves alcohol? I can have a root beer and a cheeseburger at McDonald's
while carrying my firearm and it's perfectly legal, but if I go across the
street to Applebee's and have the same meal I'm committing a felony! How is
that common sense?"

This point was clearly illustrated in Tennessee in early April when Benjamin
Felix Goeser was gunned down as he and his wife were leaving a sports bar.
Nicole Goeser had a concealed handgun license, but her gun was locked in her
car because, like Ohio, Tennessee prohibits licensees from carrying in a
restaurant that serves alcohol even if you're not drinking.

Arizona, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina,
North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin are the only
states with a complete prohibition (source: handgunlaw.us).
The change is very simple, tacking on restaurants to the existing exemption
for retail stores as found in ORC 2923.121. If this bill is enacted, it
would still be a felony for a CHL holder to consume alcohol in the
restaurant. Concealed carry in such restaurants would only be legal if the
CHL holder is not drinking.

This is just the first step in a long process, and we encourage all our
members and supporters to contact their legislators early and often to urge
them to pass this bill before the legislature takes their summer break.

Ruger has recently received a small number of reports from the field
indicating that LCP pistols can discharge when dropped onto a hard surface
with a round in the chamber. We are firmly committed to safety and would
like to retrofit all older LCP Pistols. The retrofit involves installation
of an upgraded hammer mechanism at no charge to the customer.

We want to remind gun users that, for maximum safety when carrying any
pistol with a loaded magazine in place, the chamber should be empty, and the
slide should be closed. Any gun may fire if dropped or struck.

How to determine if your pistol needs the retrofit: All LCP pistols
bearing prefix "370" (that is, serial number 370-xxxxx) may be affected.
Newly manufactured and retrofitted "370" prefix LCP pistols with the new
hammer mechanism installed have been marked with a diamond in the flat
portion of the slot just behind and below the hammer as show to the right.
Going forward, new pistols will be marked with the serial number prefix
"371" (serial number 371-xxxxx). Pistols with the "371" prefix are not affected.

How to arrange to have your pistol retrofitted:
Step 1 - Contact us and provide your name, address, telephone number
and LCP serial number.

To sign up for the FREE safety upgrade:
go to the Ruger WebSite to sign up immediately using the on-line form.

            http://www.ruger.com/LCPRecall/index.html

You may also sign up by using any of these alternative methods:

            E-mail: LCPRecall@ruger.com
            Fax: (928) 541-8873
            Phone: LCP Recall Hotline
            1-800-784-3701
            (available Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EDT)

Step 2 - The new parts are being built and we will retrofit LCP
pistols on a first-come, first-served basis as soon as they are available.
When we are ready to retrofit your pistol, we will send you a shipping label
and package with instructions so you can return your pistol to us FREE of charge.

Step 3 - We will install the new hammer mechanism, plus some other
functional upgrades that we added since the LCP's introduction, and return
your LCP to you, all FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a
FREE magazine with the new finger grip extension as a "thank you" for your
patience and cooperation. We will make every effort to return your pistol
within one week of receipt.

      Thank you,
      Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.

RUGER SR9T PRODUCT SAFETY WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE
DO NOT USE YOUR RUGER SR9 PISTOL

We have determined that some Ruger SR9 pistols manufactured between
October 2007 and April 2008 can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped
with their manual safeties in the "off" or "fire" position. The pistols will
not fire if the manual safety is in the "on" or "safe" position.

We will retrofit all Ruger SR9 pistols starting with serial number
prefix "330" (330-xxxxx) with these new parts at no charge to our customers.

In order to ensure correct fitting, these new parts must be installed
at our Ruger factory in Prescott, Arizona. We will remove the old parts and
install the new group promptly, at no charge, and will return the pistol to
you. The old parts will not be returned.

Step 1 - Contact us and provide your name, address, telephone number
and SR9 serial number.

Provide your information by any of the following:
            Website: SR9 Recall On-line Form
            E-mail: SR9Recall@ruger.com
            Fax: (928) 541-8873
            Phone: SR9 Recall Hotline
            1-800-784-3701
            (available Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EDT)

Step 2 - When we are ready to retrofit your SR9, we will send you a
shipping label and shipping box with instructions so you can return your
pistol to us FREE of charge.

Step 3 - We will install the new trigger group in your SR9 and return
it to you FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a FREE extra
magazine as a "thank you" for your patience and cooperation. We will make
every effort to return your pistol within one week, so we will not ask you
to send it to us until we are ready to receive it. We expect to begin
sending shipping labels and boxes in mid-May.

Do not load or fire your pistol until it has been factory retrofitted
with these new parts! If you must fire your pistol, be sure to keep the
manual safety in the "on" or "safe" position except when you are actually
firing.

      Thank you,
      Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.

NOTE: Miller Rod & Gun, Inc. will
return the Rugers owned by Club Members if they bring them to Miller's ...
and talk with Marlene Miller, Ed Endsley, or Mike Rogers.

To all members:

The office of Larry Dickey in East Palestine was broken into and one of the things missing is an old

muzzleloader that was hanging above the fireplace.  It was an original  36 cal. percussion long gun,

barrel about 36 inches.  A turkey was engraved on the side lock and the wood was striped light & dark,

lots of brass furnishings, original condition.  Please keep an eye out for it at area gun shows and even

flea markets.  If located, contact the local police in the area you find it and have them contact the

East Palestine Police Department.  Thanks for your help.

“200” club

Since its inception the “200” Club has raised over $50,000 for land acquisition.  All proceeds are used exclusively for purchasing land.

A lot of members ask what they can do for the club and the answer is to buy a “200” Club ticket.  Non-club members can also purchase “200” Club tickets.

This fund raising event has become a “200” Club due to the seating capacity of our facility.  Just 200 tickets are sold and there are no “meal” tickets.  Couples wishing to attend will need to purchase two of the $50 tickets.

You can pay for your $50 ticket all at once, or pay as little as $5 per month for 10 months.  Someone will be available at the monthly meeting to take your payments and will also have tickets on hand.

What does your “200” Club ticket entitle you to?

  • A Chance to win $50 at our monthly meeting from July 2005 through April 2006, providing your ticket is paid up to date.
  • A chance to win $2,000 at our banquet.
  • A fine banquet buffet, which includes soft drinks and adult beverages.
  • At the banquet countdown, the 1st ticket, the 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th, 125th, 150th, and the 175th tickets drawn each win $50.

Those holding the last four tickets remaining have the option to split the $2,000.  If one decides not to split, the countdown continues.  After each subsequent drawing the remaining ticket holders must decide whether to continue or split.

This is a great time.  The sooner you buy your ticket, the more chances you have to win one of the monthly drawings.

Thank you,

John Rook, Lowellville Rod & Gun Club Vice President
